Pavers Square Footage Calculator — How Many Pavers Do You Need?
Calculate the square footage of any paver installation — patios, driveways, walkways — and determine exactly how many pavers you need. Measure remotely from satellite or use the formula below.
The Formula — Step by Step
Measure the area
Calculate the total square footage of the surface — either with a tape measure or using SurfaceMeasure to trace the boundary on satellite imagery.
Find paver size in sq ft
Convert the paver dimensions to square feet. A 4×8 inch paver is 4 × 8 = 32 square inches ÷ 144 = 0.22 sq ft. Use the table below for common sizes.
Divide and add waste
Divide total area by paver sq ft to get the base paver count. Multiply by 1.10 for a standard 10% waste buffer. Order whole pallets — never round down.
The Formula
(Total sq ft ÷ Paver sq ft) × 1.10 = Pavers needed
Example: A 400 sq ft patio with 6×9 inch pavers (0.375 sq ft each): (400 ÷ 0.375) × 1.10 = 1,173 pavers.
Common Paver Sizes Reference
| Paver Size | Sq Ft Each | Pavers per Sq Ft |
|---|---|---|
| 4" × 8" | 0.22 sq ft | ~4.5 pavers |
| 6" × 6" | 0.25 sq ft | 4 pavers |
| 6" × 9" | 0.375 sq ft | ~2.7 pavers |
| 12" × 12" | 1 sq ft | 1 paver |
| 16" × 16" | 1.78 sq ft | ~0.56 pavers |
| 24" × 24" | 4 sq ft | 0.25 pavers |
Always add 10% for waste. Use 15% for diagonal or pattern cuts.
Measure Paver Areas Without a Site Visit
Before you can calculate paver count, you need accurate square footage. SurfaceMeasure lets you measure any patio, driveway, or walkway directly from satellite imagery — no tape measure, no site visit.
- ✓Handles curves, odd shapes, and multi-section areas
- ✓Accurate to within a few percent of tape measurement

Common Questions
It depends on paver size. A 4×8 inch paver requires ~4.5 per sq ft. A 12×12 inch paver is 1 per sq ft. Divide total area by the paver's area in sq ft, then add 10% for waste.
(Total sq ft ÷ paver sq ft) × 1.10 = pavers needed. Measure the area first, then divide by paver size, then add the waste buffer.
10% is standard. Use 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, curved borders, or irregular shapes. 5–8% is sufficient for simple straight-cut rectangular layouts.
Yes. SurfaceMeasure uses georeferenced satellite imagery. Trace the boundary, get square footage instantly, then apply your paver size formula for the count — all without leaving the office.
Trace the actual boundary polygon on the satellite image. SurfaceMeasure handles curves automatically — no approximation needed. The result is accurate square footage for the exact shape.
4×8 in = 0.22 sq ft · 6×6 in = 0.25 sq ft · 6×9 in = 0.375 sq ft · 12×12 in = 1 sq ft · 16×16 in = 1.78 sq ft · 24×24 in = 4 sq ft.
