One deck, with the water taken out
A 16 by 32 pool in a deck that runs 42 by 34 overall. The two shapes are drawn separately, which is the only way to get the number that matters.

The pool is 36% of what a glance says the job is. Quote the envelope and you are asking for $2,099 more than the work is worth, against competitors who measured. You do not lose that job narrowly. You lose it before anyone reads past the total.
The error runs the other way too. A deck with a wide sun shelf, a spa and a spillover that you did not walk is bigger than it looks, and underquoting a stamped overlay by a few hundred square feet at $8 a foot takes the margin off the whole job.
The washing side of the same slab is $165 at $0.18, which the $150 to $250 minimum lifts to $200. Worth knowing when a resurfacing lead says no: you already have the measurement, so the smaller quote costs you nothing to send.
How the measurement is done
Two shapes, one subtraction. That is the entire difference from a plain slab.
Trace the deck
Follow the outside edge of the hardscape, all the way round, including the return behind the spa and any path that is part of the same pour. This is the envelope.
Trace the pool
Draw the waterline as a second shape. Rectangles take four taps. Freeform, kidney and lagoon shapes take more points, and the outline follows the curve rather than boxing it.
Quote the difference

Every other flatwork trade measures one shape. Pool deck work measures two and reports the difference, and that is the whole job of an estimate here. A 16 by 32 pool is 512 sq ft of water that nobody is coating, and on a residential deck it is routinely a third of what the property looks like from the gate.
Rate makes it worse rather than better. At $0.18 a square foot for washing, guessing the pool wrong costs about ninety dollars and the customer probably never notices. At $4.10 a square foot for an overlay the same guess is two thousand, and at stamped-overlay rates it is four. The higher the value of the work, the more the subtraction is the estimate.
Contractors know this, which is why the usual answer is to drive out and walk it. That works, and it costs an afternoon per lead in a trade where most leads are collecting three quotes. Tracing two shapes from the office gets the same number, and it gets it while the customer is still on the phone.

Net deck area is the deck envelope with the pool surface subtracted. It is the only figure worth quoting from, because it is what you actually coat, seal or wash. On the worked example above, a 42 by 34 foot envelope is 1,428 sq ft but the pool takes 512 of that, leaving 916. Quoting the envelope on an acrylic overlay would add $2,099 to the price of the job.
You trace two shapes on the satellite image. First the outside edge of the deck, all the way round including any return behind the spa. Then the pool at the waterline, as a separate shape. The pool area is subtracted from the envelope automatically and the net figure is what your estimate uses. Coping is normally part of the deck job, so trace the pool at the water rather than outside the coping.
Yes. A curved pool is traced with more points than a rectangle, and the outline follows the curve rather than boxing it in. Lagoon shapes, kidney shapes, ovals and pools with a sun shelf all work the same way. If a spa sits outside the pool outline, draw it as a third shape so it comes off the deck area too.
Typically within 1–3% of a tape measurement when the deck edge and the waterline are both clearly visible. Pools are unusually easy to trace because water reads as a strong, high-contrast shape in aerial imagery. Screen enclosures are the exception: a dense screen can obscure the deck edge, and a deck heavily shaded by mature trees is worth walking rather than guessing at.
