Why a measurement company writes about gear
Because the two ends of this chain are the same conversation. Equipment sets how fast you clean; square footage sets how much there is to clean. Multiply them and you have a price. Most contractors get the first half right and guess at the second.
- Flow decides your cleanerGPM is what spins a surface cleaner bar. Roughly 4 inches of width per GPM — that single ratio sets the widest tool your machine can actually drive.
- Cleaner decides your rateWidth sets production rate. A 16-inch does about 1,000 sq ft an hour on smooth concrete; a 24-inch does closer to 1,700.

Equipment questions, answered straight
What to buy first, what actually matters, and what it means for your pricing.
A 4 GPM machine, a 16-inch surface cleaner, 100–200 feet of pressure hose, a reel, a set of nozzles, and safe chemical handling. Flow matters far more than pressure: 4 GPM at 3,000 PSI outperforms 3 GPM at 4,000 PSI on flatwork, because you're rinsing soil away rather than blasting it. Everything past that list is an efficiency upgrade, not a requirement.
GPM, for almost all professional work. Pressure knocks material loose; flow carries it away and determines how fast you cover ground. Contractors use chemicals to break down soiling, which turns the job into rinsing — and rinsing is a flow problem. It's also why GPM decides what size surface cleaner you can run, and therefore what your production rate and your per-square-foot price can be.
Directly, through production rate. The pricing formula is hourly target divided by production rate. A 16-inch cleaner on smooth concrete does roughly 1,000 sq ft/hr, so a $140/hour target needs $0.14/sq ft. A 20-inch does about 1,400 sq ft/hr, so the same target only needs $0.10/sq ft. The wider cleaner doesn't just save time — it lets you quote lower and still earn the same hourly rate.
Used is reasonable for the machine, risky for the pump. Engines are simple and repairable; pumps are the expensive wear item and their condition is hard to judge without running them under load. If you buy used, run it at full pressure with a correctly sized nozzle before money changes hands, and watch for pressure that fluctuates or falls off after a few minutes. Buy nozzles, hoses, and swivels new — they're cheap and they're consumables.
