How to Measure a Pool Deck by Hand

The formula for pool deck square footage is straightforward: measure the total area that the deck and pool together occupy, measure the pool surface separately, then subtract. What's left is the net deck area — the actual surface you're coating, paving, or resurfacing.

For a rectangular deck and pool:

  • Total area (deck + pool): length × width
  • Pool area: pool length × pool width
  • Net deck area: total area − pool area

For irregular layouts, break the deck into rectangular sections, calculate each, add them together, then subtract the pool area. Add a 10% buffer to your final number for material waste on most coating and paving applications — bump to 15% for complex or heavily curved jobs.

Worked Example
40 ft × 30 ft=1,200 sq ft
total footprint
20 ft × 10 ft=200 sq ft
pool area
1,000 sq ft
net deck area

1,200 sq ft total − 200 sq ft pool = 1,000 sq ft net deck

Where Manual Pool Deck Measurements Go Wrong

The formula is simple. The shapes usually aren't.

Kidney-shaped and freeform pools can't be measured with a single length-times-width calculation — you're approximating, and the error compounds. Decks that wrap around the pool, narrow on one side, or include step areas and spa surrounds require breaking the layout into multiple rectangles and hoping none of the sections overlap or get missed. Curved coping lines don't divide cleanly.

On a straightforward rectangular pool deck, manual measurement gets you close. On anything more complex, you can easily be off by 10–15% — which is fine for a rough budget number but problematic when you're ordering material or pricing a job that has to come in right.

This isn't an argument against measuring in person. For a final confirmation on a complex job, nothing replaces walking the deck with a tape. But for initial estimates, quoting, and pre-qualification — most of the measuring that happens in a typical contractor's week — there's a faster and more consistent way to do it.

Measure Any Pool Deck Remotely with SurfaceMeasure

Search any property address, trace the deck and pool outlines on satellite imagery, and get exact net square footage automatically — without driving to the site.

From address to net square footage in under five minutes.

1

Search the Address

Pull up any residential or commercial property on satellite view.

2

Draw the Deck and Pool

Use the polygon tool to trace the deck perimeter, then the pool shape inside it. Handles rectangular, kidney, freeform, and wraparound layouts equally.

3

Get Net Square Footage Instantly

SurfaceMeasure subtracts the pool area from the deck area automatically. No math, no second pass.

On-Site vs. Remote Measurement — When to Use Which

Neither approach is always right. The best contractors use both.

On-Site Manual Measuring

  • Simple rectangular pool decks
  • Final confirmation before material order on complex jobs
  • Properties without satellite coverage
  • When you're already on site for another reason

Remote Satellite Measuring — SurfaceMeasure

  • Initial estimates and quoting before a site visit
  • Irregular, freeform, or complex deck shapes
  • Multiple properties in the same day
  • Commercial sites, HOAs, and resort properties
  • Pre-qualifying jobs before committing field time

The most efficient contractors use satellite measurement for quoting and initial scoping, then confirm on site only when the job complexity warrants it.

Who Needs Accurate Pool Deck Measurements

Getting the square footage right affects every downstream decision.

Pool Deck Coating Contractors

Accurate square footage determines material quantities, labor time, and job pricing. Getting it wrong means either under-ordering or leaving money on the table.

Concrete and Paver Installers

Pool deck replacement and overlay projects need precise measurements to bid competitively without undercutting margins.

HOA and Resort Property Managers

Community pools, hotel pool decks, and waterpark surfaces often need measurement for vendor bids, maintenance planning, and capital budgeting.

Homeowners Planning Renovations

Understanding your pool deck size before calling contractors helps you evaluate quotes, budget accurately, and avoid being oversold.

Pool Deck Measurement — Common Questions

Practical answers for contractors, installers, and property managers.

The formula is: (total footprint area including pool) minus (pool surface area) equals net deck square footage. For a rectangular deck and pool, it's two multiplications and a subtraction. For irregular shapes, break the layout into rectangular sections, calculate each, sum them, then subtract the pool area. A 10% buffer on top of the net area is standard for most coating and paving material orders.

The standard approximation is to measure the longest length and widest width of the pool, multiply them, and apply a shape factor — 0.85 for kidney shapes is a common starting point. It's an estimate. SurfaceMeasure handles this more precisely by letting you trace the actual pool outline on the satellite image, which produces an accurate area calculation without the shape factor guesswork.

It depends on the scope of work. For coating or resurfacing, steps and spa surrounds typically have different application requirements, so measuring them separately gives you cleaner line items. For paving and concrete, they're usually included in the total. Measure them separately regardless — having both numbers makes quoting easier and gives you flexibility.

A 10% buffer is standard for most pool deck coating and paving projects. For complex shapes, heavy curves, or jobs with a lot of cuts, budget 15%. It's always cheaper to order slightly more upfront than to reorder mid-job with a different batch.

For most residential and commercial properties, yes. SurfaceMeasure uses georeferenced satellite imagery, so polygon measurements map to real-world coordinates rather than pixel estimates. The accuracy for most pool decks is within a few percent of a physical tape measurement — more than close enough for professional estimates and material planning.
